The Black Activism World Loses a Powerful Woman With the Passing of Viola Plummer

Posted By NYC Newswire

When anyone hears the name Viola Plummer, they will forever think of a strong black activist who fought for her people every step of the way. The co-founder of the December 12th Movement passed away on January 15th, the same day that we celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday.

Former Assemblyman/City Councilman Charles Barron, told Our Time Press. β€œMy heart is heavy, and my tears are soaking my soul! My beloved friend of over 40 years has gone, but it is fitting that two people who loved our people will now be forever linked in history. My sister Viola Plummer was completely committed to our community.”

December 12th Movement member, attorney Roger Wareham, made the announcement; β€œThis evening, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the Black Liberation Movement’s loss of one of its most resolute and determined leaders, Comrade Viola Plummer, Chairperson of the December 12th Movement. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the next few days.”

According to the Amsterdam News, in 1986, along with Sonny Abubadika Carson and many other activists, Plummer created theΒ December 12th Movement (D12).Β After Carson died in 2002, Plummer became the head of the organization.

Viola Plummer’s strong voice and wisdom will be sorely missed. The phrase “she fought the good fight”, is an understatement when speaking of Viola Plummer.

Hearing this news made me cry. She has been one of my heroes for many years. Her words always rang true. I will miss her. Unfortunately, I’m not sure who will take her position in our community, but I hope it will be someone who can be as strong as she was and fight a good fight.

Queen Viola Plummer was one of the fiercest and most loving individuals I have ever met. If you weren’t a revolutionary, you became one after hearing her address an issue. She helped you see the urgency!! Rest in Revolution you mighty Warrior Queen!
