Brooklyn’s very own Kota the Friend starts off the new year gearing up for his next project. Today, he catches the break atop a jazz-infused rap beat on new single “YUMA.” Listen HERE via FLTBYS Music and Entertainment.
“YUMA” tells the story of a wandering nomad that never settled. In a state of reflection, Kota questions the value of sacrifice without reward, acknowledging the growing pains that come along with chasing your dreams.
“I wrote [‘YUMA’] while my team and I were on tour in 2023,” Kota explains. “I really wanted to capture the essence of what it was like to travel around the country with a bunch of inner-city guys living out our dreams.”
In the video, Kota performs his new single in a barren desert in Yuma, Arizona near the border of Mexico, where time stands still and the sand dances at his feet. Watch HERE.
The contemplative track was recorded on the road during Kota’s headlining Flowers For My Friends tour, which punctuated a busy year for the independent scribe. In support of his critically acclaimed album, PROTEA, the 20-date run began in Pittsburgh and concluded in New York with a performance in front of a sold-out crowd, adding an exclamation point to a landmark year.
“YUMA” arrives on the heels of Kota’s previous single, “OREGON,” continuing a recurring proclivity to include locations in song titles. Plus, it’s the second taste of new music from his forthcoming album, Lyrics to GO Vol. 5, set for release on Thursday, January 25th.
You can get the Pre-Save link HERE for the new album, which releases on all streaming platforms on Jan, 25, 2024.
