Is Re-Zoning Destroying Historic Buildings in East New York?

If you live in East New York, or lived in East New York in the past, then you should know that the historic East New York Saving bank on Pennsylvania Ave. and Atlantic Ave. has been demolished before landmark status was granted.  Landmark buildings are important for neighborhoods, to create a sense of history and beauty, never to be found again. Just look at downtown Brooklyn and Bedford Stuyvesant, with all of their beautiful historic buildings that have been restored.

PENY (Preserving East New York) is trying to save to the historic Empire State Dairy Company Buildings, before the final vote by the New York Landmarks Commission.  The buildings are located at 2840 Atlantic Ave.

Here’s the Message from PENY:

The Empire State Dairy Company Buildings are feeling a little cold this winter, and they want the East New York community to show them some love on Saturday Feb. 25.
This is a community event for all ages to galvanize support for the landmarking of the Empire State Dairy building on 2840 Atlantic Avenue. The idea is to show affection to the building by “heart bombing” it with heart-shaped cut outs and notes. We hope this event will help the building garner more attention and get our community involved, engaged and interested in historic preservation and the process of landmarking within the neighborhood.

I was wondering how this bank was torn down so quickly. Beautiful & ornate in design with grand pillars, high ceilings & marble it had plenty of potential for renovation. Landmark status should’ve been granted but gentrification greed struck again.

I saw when the bank was being torn down brick, by brick. I thought to myself that it was a landmark building in the community, and why was it being destroyed. It’s disappointing that so many things happen in our community that we don’t know about until it’s too late. I plan to show up on February 25th in support of the effort to preserve these beautiful buildings in our community.
