This minority- and women- owned start up offers memberships to a 5000 ft² warehouse where local residents can grow their business and projects alongside access to urban farming and trade.
It is crowdfunding via In Our Backyard (ioby) through May 31, 2019 for Grow Brownsville (“GB”). Funds up to $1000 are being matched by National Grid through May 21. GB is building the Universe City Food Hub, which will serve local food systems (schools, shelters, restaurants) in Brownsville and East New York, teach residents to grow organic, hormone-free food and create a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable, and more livable city.
Universe City NYC Founders Alexis Mena, Brittany Markowitz, Franklyn Mena, and Jill Bellovin are dedicated to community building via entrepreneurship, art, and agriculture. Executive Director Franklyn Mena said, “We are building a community makers’ space like no other where agriculturalists, entrepreneurs, techies, activists and creatives can learn, connect, and thrive!”
