The New Lots Avenue Library in East New York is poised for a transformative renovation to revitalize the space and make it a dynamic resource for the community. This ambitious project, set to be a cornerstone for the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) system, will honor the area’s history while meeting the evolving needs of its residents.
Community-Led Vision
The redesign of the library is the result of extensive community input. Through numerous public meetings and workshops, local residents had a direct hand in shaping the library’s future. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a space that truly serves its community,” said a spokesperson for BPL. Organizations like Arts East New York (AENY) and Hester Street played a crucial role in ensuring the library design was deeply rooted in the community’s vision. Assembly Member Nikki Lucas expressed gratitude to the individuals and organizations, including Charles and Inez Barron, Man Up Inc., and Arts East New York as well as the city’s agencies for their efforts that contributed to bringing the vision to life.
East New York NYC Council Member, Chris Banks stated, “On Saturday, December 7th, I attended the New Lots Library Design Unveiling. This project is an historic initiative that will bring a state-of-the-art library to the 42nd Council District. This new state-of-the-art library is being built on hallowed ground, and we must all recognize the importance of honoring and respecting our ancestors who came before us. I want to extend my gratitude to the leadership team at the Brooklyn Public Library, my partners in government, and, most importantly, the community. I look forward to seeing this project come to life and will continue to support it in any way I can.”

Cutting-Edge Features
Designed by MASS Design Group and Marble Fairbanks Architects, the library’s renovation will include modern amenities that encourage learning and community interaction. Key features of the redesign include:
- Technology-Enhanced Learning Spaces: Areas dedicated to digital education and creative development.
- Children’s and Teen Zones: Specially designed spaces for younger readers and students to learn and grow.
- Community Meeting Rooms: Flexible spaces for local events and gatherings.
- Heritage Center: A tribute to the area’s historical significance, particularly its history as an African burial ground.
Honoring East New York’s Legacy
This renovation holds deep cultural and historical importance. The library is located on land that once served as a burial ground for both free and enslaved African people during the Revolutionary War. The redesign aims to integrate this heritage into the library’s identity. A dedicated Heritage Center will educate visitors about the site’s historical significance, while the adjacent Sankofa Park will help reclaim and honor African heritage. “This project ensures that our history is preserved and celebrated,” said former Councilwoman Inez Barron.

The Road Ahead
Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with the library slated to reopen in 2027. During the renovation, temporary services will continue to be available to library patrons. The $26 million project is funded by the City of New York and supported by local advocates, making it a major investment in East New York’s cultural and educational future.
“We’ll have separate spaces for children, adults, and teens,” said Fritzi Bodenheimer, a spokesperson for BPL. “There will be areas for music, art exhibitions, and beautiful outdoor plazas where the community can enjoy reading and participate in programs.”
With its innovative design and focus on community, the New Lots Avenue Library’s renovation will transform it into a vibrant hub for education, culture, and connection in East New York.
