In a move that has sparked controversy and concern, retail giants Target and ALDI have decided to drop their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. These companies operate stores in the Gateway Center Mall in East New York, a neighborhood with a predominantly Black and Brown population that stands to benefit greatly from such initiatives. The decision raises questions about the future of community investment, economic opportunities, and retail sustainability in areas that have historically been underserved. While Target was blatant in their dismissal of DEI, ALDI, according to HR Brew, quietly dropped their DEI program, erasing all signs that they ever had a DEI program.

Khari Edwards, candidate for Brooklyn Borough President stated, “It’s disappointing to watch major retailers like Target and ALDI roll back their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, especially, when inequities in hiring and leadership opportunities still persist. Here in Brooklyn, and across the country, we know highly qualified candidates (Black, Brown, women, able-bodied, LGBTQ+ & more) continue to be underrepresented in executive roles—not because of a lack of talent, but because of systemic barriers that DEI programs are designed to address.”

Edwards added. “Maybe, one day we won’t need these programs to ensure fairness, but that day is not today. Until we achieve true equity in the workplace, these commitments must remain a priority, not an afterthought.”

The Impact on East New York

East New York is a vibrant community filled with hardworking families, many of whom rely on retail jobs for stable employment. DEI programs in major corporations have provided pathways for local residents to secure jobs, advance within companies, and benefit from fair hiring practices. These programs exist because of longstanding inequities in hiring, even when job applicants have equal qualifications. If job opportunities and opportunities for advancement were truly equal, there would never have been a need for DEI programs in the first place. With the elimination of these initiatives, there is a growing concern that employment opportunities will shrink, leaving residents at a disadvantage.

Gateway Mall, home to both Target and Aldi, serves as a crucial retail hub for the neighborhood. These stores not only provide essential goods at affordable prices but also employ many local residents. By dropping DEI programs, these companies send a signal that equitable hiring, promotion, and community engagement are no longer priorities. Without these programs, hiring practices may revert to outdated models that overlook the talent within the local community. Additionally, local community members will look to shop at other stores that believe Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a necessary program to even a playing field that has always been uneven in the United States.

A Broader Trend with Economic Consequences

Target and Aldi’s decision is part of a broader trend of companies stepping away from DEI initiatives, often in response to political and shareholder pressure. However, this shift comes with potential economic consequences. Stores in communities like East New York thrive when they actively engage with the local population. Without DEI-driven community investment, consumer trust and brand loyalty may decline, leading to decreased foot traffic and ultimately store closures.

Similar malls in urban areas across the country have seen declines when retailers fail to invest in the communities they serve. Job losses, increased vacancies, and economic stagnation are common outcomes when large corporations disengage from local hiring and business development programs. The impact of Target and Aldi’s decision could lead to a downturn in Gateway Mall, mirroring retail struggles seen in other marginalized communities. Removing DEI opportunities could set communities of color back 20 years, undoing hard-fought progress in employment and economic mobility.

What Comes Next?

Community leaders and activists in East New York are already voicing their concerns, calling for transparency and accountability from these corporations. Without DEI initiatives, they argue, the neighborhood risks losing critical employment opportunities and economic growth. Some are urging local officials to push for commitments from retailers to ensure fair hiring and investment in the community.

If companies like Target and Aldi continue down this path, they may see a decline not only in workforce diversity but also in customer loyalty. Consumers in East New York and beyond are increasingly choosing to support businesses that align with their values. Communities of color know they have massive buying power, and it remains to be seen if companies like Target and Aldi can survive, at least in East New York and similar communities around the country. If these corporations fail to reinstate meaningful diversity programs, they may find their bottom lines affected in the long run.

Will Retailers Suffer Diminishing Sales?

The decision by Target and ALDI to abandon DEI programs is a disappointing setback for East New York, a neighborhood that has long struggled for economic equity. Without these initiatives, the future of Gateway Mall and similar retail centers becomes uncertain. As the community grapples with these changes, one thing is clear: corporate responsibility should not be a temporary trend but a long-term commitment to the people who sustain these businesses. The question remains—will Target and Aldi reconsider their stance, or will they risk alienating the very communities that keep their doors open? We will look into the other stores at Gateway to identify retailers that removed DEI programs.
