East New York’s Iconic White Castle to Be Demolished for Two Eight-Story Buildings

Posted By Sandy Whitaker

If you’ve driven down Atlantic Avenue in East New York lately, you may have noticed the White Castle between Berriman Street and Shepherd Avenue — a neighborhood landmark since 1958 — will soon be making way for new development.

Permits have been filed for two eight-story mixed-use buildings at 229 Shepherd Avenue and 3079 Atlantic Avenue — the current site of the White Castle. The development will rise in the Cypress Hills section of East New York, just steps from the Norwood Avenue J/Z subway station.

Plans show the new 84-foot-tall structures will span more than 131,000 square feet — with 125,238 square feet for residential use and 6,342 square feet of commercial space. The two buildings would bring 198 new apartments to the area, averaging about 632 square feet each. No on-site parking is planned.

The project is being developed by Joel Weiss of Empire Management & Construction, with De-Jan Lu of DJLU Architect listed as the architect of record. While demolition permits have not yet been filed, this signals another wave of new residential development pushing deeper into East New York.

An estimated completion date has not been provided.

For White Castle fans the White Castle on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York will remain open, continuing the chain’s 65+ year presence in the neighborhood.
