East New York Students Get a Boost: Assemblywoman Lucas Provides School Essentials

Posted By Todd Betzold

Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas’ 12th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway remained a vital event for families in the 60th Assembly District, uniting hundreds of attendees in East New York over the weekend.

Along with distributing essential school supplies to 1,000 local students, the event featured programs geared towards helping children approach the school year with confidence and enthusiasm.

This year, more than 600 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, and other classroom necessities were handed out to children. To broaden the event’s reach, another 400 backpacks were supplied to various neighborhood organizations in Brooklyn.

Parents voiced relief and gratitude for the giveaway, noting it eased the added expense of preparing for the new school year amid rising living costs.

The initiative received robust community backing, with Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez in attendance and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries offering support.

Both highlighted the importance of such programs in fostering partnerships between local businesses, families, and civic leaders.

Beyond Supplies: Building Confidence

Aside from the supply giveaway, children received free haircuts from area barbers and stylists, helping them return to school looking and feeling their best. These extras supported the larger goal of the event—promoting self-confidence and offering practical help.

Parents also thanked organizers, noting the assistance is especially valuable as essentials like groceries, housing, and clothing become more expensive.

A Community Tradition

Assemblywoman Lucas regards the annual giveaway as a demonstration of the district’s shared responsibility to its youth, not just a fundraising effort.

“Hosting this Back-to-School Giveaway for the 12th year reminds me every time how vital it is to invest in young people and ease the load for parents,” Lucas said. “When kids show up prepared, they’re excited to learn, giving the school year a positive start.”

This longstanding event in East New York stands as a beacon of hope and togetherness, reflecting the community’s resilience and collective spirit in supporting its children.
