The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has awarded $1.4 million to five workforce development organizations through its East Brooklyn Workforce Development Fund, directly benefiting Brownsville, East New York, and surrounding communities. Launched in November 2024, the fund connects local residents to career opportunities in construction, the green economy, and other emerging industries.

Five Local Organizations Receive Funding

“With the city making significant investments in the equitable growth of East Brooklyn, it’s essential that the local workforce is equipped and connected to the jobs of tomorrow,” said NYCEDC President & CEO Andrew Kimball.

The five award recipients include:

  • Brighter Opportunity Through Trade – Expanding a welding training and certification program in partnership with Lambo Mechanical and Imagine That.

  • Brownsville Think Tank Matters – Launching a construction upskilling program with Monadnock Construction.

  • IMPACCT Brooklyn – Launching entrepreneurship and real estate development workforce programs in partnership with BMS Family Health and Wellness Centers, Community Mediation Services, and Urbane Development.

  • Local Development Corporation of East New York – Making operational investments to connect residents to career pathways, particularly tied to Broadway Junction and the Urban Village Construction Academy.

  • Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow – Launching a new East Brooklyn version of their Renewable Energy & Sustainable Construction pre-apprenticeship program.

Support from Local Leaders

Council Member Sandy Nurse celebrated the announcement, stating, “This $1.4 million is an investment in East New Yorkers and our workers. It will extend successful programs to East Brooklyn and help train more people to serve in both legacy and new, sustainable industries.”

Council Member Chris Banks added, “These award recipients have strong track records of community engagement and delivering equitable impact.”

Broadway Junction Revitalization and Citywide Development Goals

This funding is part of a broader economic strategy tied to the revitalization of the Broadway Junction area. NYCEDC has already committed $130 million for infrastructure upgrades and public space improvements, including two new plazas and enhanced streetscapes. The goal is to improve transportation access and overall quality of life in East Brooklyn.

Nonprofit and Community Support

Leaders from the awarded organizations expressed their excitement about expanding services.

“With your support, we can drive meaningful change and cultivate sustainable growth within the community,” said Leslie Lambert, President of Brighter Opportunity Through Trade.

Bill Wilkins, Executive Director of the Local Development Corporation of East New York, emphasized the long-term impact: “We are working to reverse historic trends of unemployment and poverty by connecting local talent to family-sustaining jobs.”

Brooklyn Community Board 16 Chairperson Genese T. Morgan shared similar sentiments: “Employment has long been a critical need in East Brooklyn. We look forward to the positive impact this investment will have on our community.”

As East Brooklyn continues to evolve, the East Brooklyn Workforce Development Fund is ensuring that local residents are not only included but are leading the way in building the future of their neighborhoods.
