Independent contender for mayor Andrew Cuomo signaled he could reach across the aisle by including Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa as part of his team if victorious.
The move, suggested during a recent radio interview, comes as Cuomo fights to gain ground on Democratic favorite Zohran Mamdani in advance of the November 4 election.
Poll: Cuomo Narrows Gap When Sliwa Exits
Since June’s primary, Mamdani has kept a commanding double-digit edge, securing frontrunner status. But a fresh AARP/Gotham Polling & Analytics poll indicates the numbers could change significantly were Sliwa to withdraw.
Poll figures indicate Mamdani’s advantage would drop to just four percent—a statistical dead heat with Cuomo—without Sliwa in contention.
This has sparked calls from moderate Republicans and Democrats, urging Sliwa to consider dropping out so opposition to Mamdani could be consolidated.
Republican Donors Push for Cuomo Unity
Billionaire John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and WABC Radio, where Sliwa broadcasts, has been especially vocal—appearing on air Monday to urge Sliwa to leave the race and back Cuomo.
The following day, Cuomo told Sid Rosenberg on air that he’d be open to a partnership with Sliwa. When asked about a potential City Hall post for Sliwa, Cuomo at first deflected but ultimately suggested he might support the idea.
“That is definitely something I’d be interested in,” Cuomo said. “We have to run this city with broad support. New Yorkers must unite.”
Sliwa Stays the Course
Just the night before, Cuomo had dismissed any deal while talking to businessman Elisha Wiesel.
Nevertheless, Sliwa’s camp isn’t budging. “Curtis Sliwa remains in this race,” his spokesperson Daniel Kurzyna asserted. “Let the voters have their say in 15 days.”
GOP County Chairs Endorse Sliwa
On Tuesday, Republican county chairs from all five boroughs issued a unified statement backing Sliwa’s campaign.
They emphasized steadfast opposition among the Republican base to any cooperation with Cuomo, who is still seen primarily as a Democratic leader.
