New York Fashion Week is about to get a serious dose of Brooklyn flavor! Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Colm Dillane, the founder of KidSuper, are partnering to offer five emerging Brooklyn-based designers an extraordinary opportunity to showcase their collections during NYFW. The runway? None other than the grand setting of Brooklyn Borough Hall itself. This collaboration represents a significant investment in the borough’s creative community and promises to be a highlight of the fashion season.
A Launchpad for Brooklyn’s Fashion Talent: The NYFW Showcase
This initiative is designed to provide a platform for emerging designers who often face significant barriers to entry in the competitive fashion industry. The open call is now live, and the deadline for applications is July 6 at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be notified the week of July 18. The selected designers will receive a comprehensive package of support, including a $5,000 grant to help cover production costs, invaluable mentorship from Colm Dillane, and a coveted spot in the NYFW event at Brooklyn Borough Hall. This combination of financial assistance, expert guidance, and high-profile exposure is designed to significantly boost the careers of these talented individuals.
Eligibility and Application Details: Who Can Apply?
To be considered, applicants must be Brooklyn residents aged 18 or older. Their collections must be runway-ready 15 days prior to the show. While the $5,000 grant is a welcome financial boost, designers are responsible for the production of their garments. The Borough President’s office will handle all event logistics. This includes securing models, makeup artists, stylists, photographers, and videographers. They will also handle the full-scale runway production, encompassing everything from professional lighting and music to captivating stage design. This allows the designers to concentrate on their creative vision without the overwhelming burden of event planning.
Reynoso’s Vision: Investing in Brooklyn’s Creative Future
This fashion show aligns with the Arts Ambassador Initiative. This initiative was launched during Reynoso’s 2025 State of the Borough address. It reflects a commitment to nurturing Brooklyn’s thriving creative scene. The goal is to mentor new artists, connect them to relevant cultural institutions, and showcase their work to the public. The initiative seeks to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for creatives in Brooklyn.
According to Reynoso, “From streetwear in Bed-Stuy to bridal boutiques in Bay Ridge, people from all over the world come to Brooklyn for the fashion and style that originates here.” He acknowledged the challenges that young and aspiring designers face in gaining recognition, stating that this fashion show will provide a crucial opportunity to “get their foot in the door.”
Colm Dillane: A Brooklyn Native Giving Back
As the borough’s inaugural Arts Ambassador, Colm Dillane brings a unique blend of street cred and high fashion expertise to the project. He is the innovative mind behind KidSuper. The brand seamlessly blends art, clothing, and community. Dillane’s own journey to success has made him a role model for aspiring designers. His impressive accomplishments include winning the Karl Lagerfeld Prize in 2021, guest-designing Louis Vuitton’s 2023 men’s collection, and collaborations with major brands like PUMA and the Brooklyn Nets.
“Brooklyn is home – and no two blocks ever look the same. You’ve got skaters weaving past strollers, old-school locals trading stories, and kids in head-to-toe looks; they definitely styled themselves,” Dillane shared. “I’m excited to help guide these young creatives as they shape their own version of what Brooklyn looks like now.”
