“Brookdale becomes only the second ACS-verified trauma center in Brooklyn
(New York) – Brookdale Hospital Medical Center today announced verification by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), a part of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT). This achievement recognizes Brookdale’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients. The verification is an indication of best practices across the organization.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COT’s Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for acute trauma care, but across the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum spans the pre-hospital and Emergency Room phase through the rehabilitation process.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons. Brookdale Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Brooklyn to receive verification by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma to date.
The ACS COT provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. In New York State, once verified, the New York Department of Health can designate the verified hospital as a trauma center. The ACS COT standards for trauma centers are more rigorous than measures previously used by New York State.
“The ACS’s verification of our trauma center is an indication of Brookdale’s dedication to providing quality and comprehensive care,” said Mark E. Toney, President and CEO of Brookdale Hospital. “Brookdale being a trauma center is critical to saving many lives in our community.”
“Brookdale Hospital is a vital resource to Southeast Brooklyn,” said Senator Roxanne Persaud. “I commend the leadership and staff for their dedication to the health care needs of an often underserved community. Brookdale’s compassion under pressure allows the Hospital to save more lives and help their neighbors prosper.”
